Domhnall and his co-star Alicia Vikander attended the 2015 Moet British Independent Film Awards earlier this month. Domhnall was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work in “Brooklyn” but he lost to his father Brendan Gleeson. He took the stage to accept the award on behalf of his father. He later accepted the award for his “The Revenant” co-star Tom Hardy for Best Actor. Domhnall’s other movie “Ex Machina” took home several awards, including for Best British Independent Film and Best Director.

Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson (son of actor Brendan Gleeson) has been a dependable screen presence for over five years now by standing out in a number of projects that featured bigger box-office draws than himself.
In “Frank” he stole scenes from a masked Michael Fassbender; in “Anna Karenina” he was a comic revelation opposite Keira Knightley; and in “About Time,” he proved he could lead a romantic comedy opposite a vet of the genre, Rachel McAdams. 2015 could be the year that Gleeson finally becomes a household name thanks to his involvement in the most anticipated film of the year, J.J. Abrams entry into the “Star Wars” canon, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which opens this December.

Various sites are reporting and speculating that “Ex Machina” is on it’s way to become this year’s Summer sleeper hit at the U.S. box office. Deadline is reporting the following story:
Amid the bang boom of Furious 7 dominating the box office again in its fourth frame with a $320.5M domestic gross, a cult film was percolating on the charts: A24’s sci-fi drama Ex Machina. The film posted the distrib’s best weekend ever with $5.44M at 1,255 playdates, beating the wide weekend expansion of its 2013 release Spring Breakers ($4.9M). Fans around the web are already heralding the movie as Blade Runner meets Social Network.
Ex Machina follows programmer Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) who is invited to his reclusive billionaire CEO’s (Oscar Isaac) remote, high-tech estate for the week. Caleb has been chosen to evaluate and test Ava, an alluring robot artificial intelligence who proves to be more sophisticated and deceptive than either guy imagines.
On the surface, the film is apt to draw some comparisons to RADiUS teen horror film It Follows in regards to its indie hipness factor, enormous critical acclaim (each title has better than a 90% Rotten Tomato score) and the fact that they’re arthouse crossover successes.
Domhnall sat down with David Poland from DP/30 to talk about “Ex Machina” earlier this month. It’s a really nice and in-depth interview and definitely worth the watch. Be aware that it does contain spoilers on “Ex Machina“.
He’s one of those actors who you might kind of recognize now (in spite of 15 feature film credits already), but will soon be hard to avoid with Star Wars, The Revenant (from this year’s Oscar winning director and Leo DiCaprio) and a hot Sundance movie (Brooklyn) on the way. He is one of the three stars of the remarkable Ex Machina. He talks about the film (with some spoilers), his work, and his perspective on a life in film with David Poland. Shot in Los Angeles, April 2015
